NonFiction (Roth)

Children of the Wild West New York-Toronto-London-Sydney-Auchland: Scholastic Inc. (104 pp., illustrated) - ISBN: 0-590-46474-4 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With a focus on children's experience of the American frontier history from the 1840s to the early 1900s, Russell Freedman tells about the hardships of early pioneers on their way west as well as their everyday life after they had settled down in Oregon, California, or other western states. One chapter of the book is dedicated to the native inhabitants of the western territory -- the American Indians. Two other interesting chapters tell about frontier schools and how games, parties, and celebrations made the hard daily life more bearable for children and adults alike. Dozens of excellent, large-sized photos illustrate the author's excellent description of pioneer life. Freedman's first chapter even gives an overview of the work of frontier photographers. While the well-researched book is aiming at younger readers, I still recommend "Children Of The Wild West" for every reader interested in basic facts of the American frontier history. Freedman's style of writing is entertaining as well as educating. He doesn't overwhelm the reader with numbers or dry facts, yet never fails to name the most important events complete with year dates. (Rezension bei Amazon)

Children of the West. Family Life on the Frontier
London: Blue Guides (256 pp., illustrated) - ISBN: 0393049231 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author's excellent story-telling skills brought out so much imagery which brought the story alive. I felt such a kinship with these now long-lost people. Chock full of wonderful photographs of fresh-faced children at work and at play. There were children at play with some ornate and expensive toys and dolls, playing chase, performing chores at home as well as the dangers from Indian attacks and harsh weather they and their families faced on the prairies. There were some horrific instances related by early settlers of Indian attack, also marauding white ruffians. Some fathers and husbands were cruel and some settlers simply were mentally fragile. There were very sad stories of women who had many children but husbands who did not financially support their families nor any law or agency to help them. Many or most of these people were dependent only upon themselves to grow enough food and gather fuel to sustain their lives. (Rezension bei Amazon)

Elliot West ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Historians have paid little attention to the lives and contributions of children who took part in westward expansion. In this major study of American childhood, now available again in paperback, Elliott West explores how children helped shape--and in turn were shaped by--the frontier experience. Frontier children's first vivid perceptions of the new country, when deepened by their work, play, and exploration, forged a stronger bond with their surroundings than that of their elders. Through diaries, journals, letters, novels, and oral and written reminiscences, West has reconstructed the lives of the children who grew to become the first truly Western generation.
