It should be noted that from 1874–1911, Colt serial numbered all their Gatling guns sequentially, starting with serial number one. Each Gatling gun would have 2 sets of numbers, the serial number on the right side of the gun frame and then the assembly number
stamped on all of the guns major parts; the assembly number would begin each year with the number "1". (…) The barrels appear original to the gun and are numbered 1-10 in an identical font to that appearing on the rear barrel retaining plate. Additionally nearly all the parts are assembly numbered "1", all with the same stamp in the same font: front barrel retainer, rear barrel retainer, cover plate plug, top cover and breech housing. (…) There are capital letter "A", Ainsworth inspector’s markings on many parts: breech housing, housing cover, carrier, plug and most of the barrels at the breech.”
